Medusa Contemplates The Moon

sense
she says
to herself
they only
come to kill
not to love
seeing him
in the shadows
half naked
bright shield
held up
a speculum
a blue light
flickering
above a
white horizon
she could
not resist
her sister’s
huddled
beside her
weeping
all these
years waiting
surrounded
by stone
turning
to stone
she smelled him
in the darkness alive
music everywhere
women wailing
her own heart beating
there is no
forgiveness
in never
being loved
being held
at arm’s length
always forced
to see herself
in someone else’s lies
Medusa
Published July 31, 2012 by rlmcdermottA gorgoneia,
she could
not save
herself,
the smell
of baking
bread coiling
through
the cave,
her sister’s
laughter
and then
another
sound–
footsteps.
Even
the snakes
were
frightened
hissing
in the
nest
of her
hair,
she could
not comfort
them–
her own
heart
pounding.
She looked
at him,
her eyes wide
with what
was blinding
about her,
and waited
for his
bright gaze.
A shield,
a sword,
then all
was stillness.
Finally,
her
sisters
calling
her name
and then
a sound
escaping
from her
own mouth–
wings
and
hoofbeats.
Medusa’s Sisters

as a
surprise;
she looked
at her
sister’s hands,
weathered,
mishapen,
and realized–
they had
grown old.
These two
had seen
the worst
of it–voices
in the darkness,
murderous intentions,
and a shield
made of
snakeskin.
How it
sparkled
when he
held it up
the day
they lost
her; there
had been
no blood,
just the
sound of
wings opening,
and the dark
cave suddenly
filling with light.
They spent
their lives
on that island
trying their
best to
get off, but
something
always
defeated
them–
it was not
their fault.
Still they
watched
the horizon–
hoping.
Sometimes
a great
white horse
would cross
the sky,
the sound
of its wings
would bring
them to
the shore,
and they
would stand
breathless
holding each
